Camping trips are an integral part of each
campers Kieve experience. From the youngest to the
oldest, every camper faces the tests of exploration, discovery,
and
adaptation to the varied surroundings he encounters.
As a camper grows older and more able, his
trips become more extensive and demanding. The youngest boys
may travel to nearby Fort Island in the Damariscotta River,
to Bradbury Mountain near Freeport, or to our oceanfront camping
area for one or more nights. The older boys may be gone from
camp for two to three weeks of hiking, sea kayaking, or canoeing
in the most remote and rewarding areas of Maine.
Still, the aim of every camping trip are
similar. In addition to learning a reverence for the wonders
of nature, each boy is encouraged to learn how to take care
of himself and his equipment, to set and attain goals, and
to learn how to become the kind of person that others can
turn to for support. The trip is a group enterprise, the success
of which depends upon the good will and cooperation of each
member.
Kieves trips are designed so that the
least-experienced boy does not feel unduly pushed, yet each
camper can be proud of what he has accomplished. None of
our
trips requires previous experience. Boys receive rudimentary
training before leaving camp. Then, as the trip progresses,
each boy grows more and more skilled. Most trip groups include
both veteran campers and boys new to the experience.
Safety is paramount on all Kieve trips. The
topflight equipment provided by Kieve is designed for both
comfort and safety. Counselors are chosen for their knowledge
and experience, their levelheadedness, their patience
and kindness.
Forest rangers with radios are accessible
on every day of a trip. Each days campsite has been
predetermined before the trip leaves Kieve; and, in case
of
an emergency, a boy can be flown out from a trip to the nearest
hospital.
