Programs

Kieve's Leadership School offers a variety of programs which have at their core the common goal of encouraging responsible decision-making in adolescents by increasing self-awareness and self-confidence, providing accurate information, and teaching important coping skills. In all programs the teaching methods are "affective". Instead of being lectured to, participants are presented with concepts, vocabulary, issues, and problems, and then interact with each other in activities that address the particular topic.

Leadership School programs include:
Educator Workshops
Residential Programs
Community Outreach Programs
Learning Together Adult Programs
Teen-Adult Dialogue Nights

Educator Workshops
Educator workshops are designed to expand teachers' professional and personal goals. Kieve staff offer a number of three-day Educator Workshops during the summer at Kieve's Kennedy Learning Center. Course work centers around topics which enable teachers to have the maximum impact on all students in their classrooms. Workshops focusing on the experiential education model, teambuilding, and expeditionary learning are among those offered. Participants will develop a thematic project for use with students or staff. This project can be used to expand students' participation or as a different approach to delivering curriculum or programs. Continuing Education and/or Professional Development Points can be earned at these courses.

Residential Programs
Residential programs, held at our beautiful campuses on Damariscotta Lake in Nobleboro & Jefferson, ME, are usually five days in length. Schools usually contract to send an entire class at one time, and the curriculum is tailored to meet the goals set by the school itself. Students live in dormitory-style cabins and are supervised throughout their stay by Kieve staff. Teachers from participating schools are encouraged to join the program as students, an approach which promotes trust and respect between students and teachers. Parents are invited to attend an evening session held during the residential week; this is an opportunity to learn about the Leadership School experience from staff and from their children. This information helps parents support their child's personal growth after the program is over. A graduation program is held on the final day. The simple ceremony recognizes each student individually. After diplomas are awarded, the program closes with a large-group activity which reinforces the new skills learned and which celebrates the closeness and good spirit developed during the week.

Community Outreach Programs
The Community Outreach program takes The Leadership School directly into the school and covers the same curriculum topics as the residential program in a condensed format over a three-day period. Each class of students includes a teacher/observer from the school. Teachers and students learn to relate to one another in more meaningful ways, and teachers learn new communication techniques. A session for both parents and students is commonly scheduled for either the first or second evening. The goals of this meeting are to inform parents about the school's curriculum, promote discussion of how the issues relate to their children, and encourage further parent/child communication at home. A graduation ceremony is held at the end of the final day. Diplomas are awarded and a large-group activity celebrates the new skills learned and the closeness and good spirit developed over the three days.

"Learning Together" Adult Programs

The Learning Together workshop is an opportunity for parents to meet other parents in their community while participating in an interactive workshop facilitated by Kieve's Leadership School staff.

Kieve hosts a Learning Together workshop each Wednesday of a residential program from 10am-3pm.  All meals and materials are covered in the price.

The Aspirations Program hosts a parent night for freshman and their parents.  This workshop is about 1.5 hours long.

Kieve will also conduct parent workshops customized to meet your needs. Please contact us for more information at leadershipschool@kieve.org Subject: Parent workshops.

Visitor's Night
Visitor’s Night provides an opportunity for student’s families, friends, and community members to visit The Leadership School and see where their students have been living and what they have been doing during their week at our school.  This program works in conjunction with Learning Together if visitors are able to spend the whole day at TLS, or allows visitors who cannot make the full day commitment of Learning Together to join us for a pasta dinner and slide show of their students’ week.  Visitors will also have a chance to see their students’ cabins, the adventure course, meet the teachers, and spend time in a classroom learning about the classes and participating in an experiential-based activity.
SCHEDULE:
5:15 Parents arrive and meet our residential director, Samantha Richard, in the dining hall for a welcome and orientation
5:30 Parent and students eat a pasta dinner together with the rest of The Leadership School staff.  During this time visitors will also have a chance to see their student’s cabins, classes, solo sites, or the adventure course.
6:05 Slide show in Innisfree with pictures of your students during the class day, choice time, evening program, cabins, and meals.  This is a great conversations starter between visitors and students and allows visitors to see a real day in the life of a Leadership School student.
6:30-7:00 Visitors and students will head to their “homespace” or homeroom for the week.  Here your student’s Leadership School teacher will explain the daily schedule and classes, and will facilitate a fun activity that will engage both visitors and students in the learning style typical of all of our classes.
7:00 Visitors will say goodbye to their students and make their way home and students will head into the Evening Program portion of their day.
